Baseball immortal Cy Young, the sport's all-time winningest pitcher, leads the lineup of these encapsulated 1909 Colgan's Chips, the 1-1/2-inch round "cards" obtained back in the day by those purchasing Colgan's "Violet Chips" or "Mint Chips" chewing gum. There was one "Stars of the Diamond" in each 5-cent package. The Young example is slabbed FR 1.5, with that of fellow Hall of Famer Frank Chance earning an inviting mark of NM 7 (Pop 2, 1 higher). The condition leader and also a PSA champion is a Mint 9 example of St. Louis' Frank Laporte (Pop 1, none higher, only three ever graded by PSA). At NM-MT 8 is George McBride (Pop 1, none higher, 7 total), while two at EX-MT 6 are Jimmy Austin NY (Pop 3, 2 higher) and Matty McIntyre Detroit (Pop 1, 4 higher). Also contributing to the stash are four VG-EX 4s; Johnny Bates (Phil.), Kid Elberfield (NY), "Walker" and Clarence Wauner. Good 2 entries are Charlie Babb (Memphis), Bill Bartley, Hobe Ferris and Orville Woodruff (Louisville). Completing are Dick Bayless (Good 2 (MC)) and Nick Altrock (PR 1). Fascinating relics.
