Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

Our consignor's intriguing collection of encapsulated cardboard includes these pre-war goodies, with the earliest dating back to 1924-25. Two are from the cherished Maple Crispette issue, with Hall of Fame goaltender Clint Benedict's card #2 graded but PR-FR 1 by PSA, while that picturing first-year Boston Bruin Smokey Harris is better at GOOD 2. PSA numbers confirm the scarcity of Maple Crispette cards, with just 18 Benedict cards ever showing up at PSA and just 20 Harris examples graded in the history of the company. Meanwhile, an original Bruin, George Redding, is featured on an appealing V145-2 card, with #28 in the set slabbed EX+ 5.5 by PSA. It's a Pop 1, with just five higher, out of only 15 total submissions. A trio from the 1933-34 season will also pique the interest of pre-war collectors, with an O-Pee-Chee rookie card of Hall of Famer Red Horner graded VG 3 and joined by two "Ice Kings"; longtime Canadiens' captain Sylvio Mantha (#42) is at VG-EX 4, while 35-George Patterson RC is a pleasing EX 5 contributor. Both of the Ice Kings have bilingual backs. Completing the lot in a big way is an oversized '39-40 OPC card of Canadiens' forward Armand Mondou, graded VG-EX 4 and one of only ten total submissions of card #27 to PSA.
