Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Existing in Quebec as a senior team from 1915-16 through 1926-27, the Sons of Ireland were Art Ross Cup winners in 1916 and 1917, winning Quebec Senior championships in 1920, 1922, 1923 and 1924. The club later folded in 1927, unable to compete with the semi-professional Quebec Beavers. We have a Sons of Ireland real photo postcard collection of 14, along with an additional 5 photos. Included, we have 13 individual player postcards with postal-divided reverses, with each image taken in the same location, along with a pair of different team shot postcards. This is followed by 4 blank-backed cameo portrait images just slightly over postcard size, along with an additional 3 ¾” x 6” photo of a SOI player in poor condition.
The 13 individual postcards include a pair of goalies, with one of the team shots identifying players in pencil over the reverse and the years they played with the Sons including George Carey, George McNaughton, Herb Rheaume, Art Gagne and Leo Gaudreault. The individual photos are 3 ¾” x 5 ¾” and on postcard stock, with each having a blank reverse. The final photo in low grade (trimmed with heavy creasing and tears) has a photographers stamp over the reverse along with an ink notation. The majority of the postcards exhibit moderate handling and corner wear with no writing over the reverse, and no excessive or obtrusive creasing. There is some silvering to the photographs, with a few having heavy toning over the reverse.
