Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

Leading the league in goals during the 1932-33 NHL season and finishing second in the Canadian Division, the Montreal Maroons would lose a tight-fought two-game series with Detroit during the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. We have a real photo postcard featuring the fabled franchise in 1932-33, with this example signed over the verso by Maroon Jimmy Ward. At the standard 3 ½” x 5 ½”, the familiar Rice image has seen plenty of use including on period puzzles, with all team member pictured along with management, with “Montreal Maroons 1932-33” across the top border. HOFers Lionel Conacher, Reggie Noble, Hooley Smith and manager Eddie Gerard are all present and accounted for, with Jimmy Ward executing an absolutely gorgeous and flowing fountain pen signature over the reverse, adding “Maroons” and “Best of Luck”.
While technically in lower grade with heavy toning, surface wear and a few large creases, the postcard displays admirably, with heavy toning repeated over the reverse along with a few small and faint stains. The Ward signature is a significant exemplar, bold and dark with wonderful aesthetics, helping to make this desirable Montreal Maroons specimen unique.
