This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Hailing from his time as the sixth Governor General of Canada, we have an exceedingly rare circa-1890 trade card of the man responsible for the Stanley Cup, Lord Stanley of Preston, with this highly desirable scarcity graded and encapsulated by SGC. At approx 3” x 4 ½” and featuring an attractive woodcut image, the advertiser WM Gray & Sons carriage works is listed on the both the front and reverse, along with the company’s showroom locations in Chatham, Winnipeg and Windsor. Graded 20 Fair 1.5, the antique trade card exhibits corner wear along with a few small creases, with spotting over the reverse and a handwritten name in purple pencil crayon. Accompanying the Stanley card and the perfect companion, we have a matching trade card for “Lady Stanley”, with advertising from Berdan Bros. pianos and organs, with this example encapsulated by SGC and graded 35 Good+ 2.5. It should also be noted that these are the first Lord and Lady Stanley trade cards that we have ever seen or offered.
The accompanying Lady Stanley trade card exhibits corner wear along with a few small creases, with some light spotting over the reverse. We should also note that both SGC cases show wear, with a few minor scratches and marks.
