Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Considerably rarer and much harder to locate than examples featuring complete teams, we have a collection of individual hockey player postcards totaling 15, spanning from the first decade of the twentieth century to approx. the 1940s, along with a mounted 4” x 6” player photo. With the majority real photo postcards, highlights include an example identified as Fred Bradley (posed with dog), one showing a player using a field hockey stick, one caricature postcard from 1945 showing a Quebec goalie with coffin, one featuring a pair of players in “ACL” jerseys and a wonderful cameo image of a player in detailed high-neck sweater with three-lions team crest. Four of the postcards also appear signed by the respective player, including one marked “Lake Placid 1921” and one signed by “Box-Car Thompson” and dated 1935.
With wonderful images of period wool uniforms and one-piece paper label hockey sticks, the majority of the postcards exhibit moderate to heavier wear, with toning along with surface/edge/corner wear the main culprits. The postcard featuring the dual players in ACL uniforms is heavily creased, while the mounted photo shows just light wear. We should also note that the three-lions postcard is possibly a photo, as the reverse remains completely blank.
