Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Beginning as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974 and predating the Avalanche by almost two decades, the Colorado Rockies saw only six seasons of NHL action, with the club relocating to New Jersey in the fall of 1982. High on the list of vintage jersey type collectors, we have an especially attractive Rockies example worn by Joe Watson in 1978-79. A small Champion label with “50” sizing remains affixed to the collar, with no other labeling present, with the garment hemmed-up at the waist. Sporting a rubberized Rockies team crest, “2” appears over the sleeves and verso also rubberized, along with matching team crests over each shoulder. “Watson” appears in heat-pressed letters over the affixed nameplate, with an intact garter-style fight strap also utilized.
We should also note that this style jersey was worn in both 1977-78 and 1978-79, with the possibility existing of use from other players donning the #2, including Bryan Lefley in 1977-78 and Nick Beverly, who also wore #2 (along with Watson) in 1978-79. A large streak is present beneath the team crest, with this torn and repaired over a small section, with some loose threading over the lower front hem. A few board burns and marks are visible over each sleeve along with small resulting holes, with a portion of the right sleeve’s number somewhat “melted” from contact friction.
