Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018

Once referred to by the extremely successful Soviet national team coach Viktor Tikhonov as “the world’s best all-around player”, Bob Gainey spent 15 seasons leading the Montreal Canadiens to one of the most prominent eras in the club’s history, with 5 Stanley Cups won as a player – along with a 6th victory as a GM in 1999. Originally acquired as part of a find that included the few known 1989 Montreal Canadiens Stanley Cup finals game-worn jerseys in circulation, we have a Canadiens photo-matched captain’s jersey that was worn by Gainey during both the Conference finals and Stanley Cup finals! A Maska Ultrafil label graces the collar, with the jersey measuring-out to roughly a size 54. Styled with the most recognizable team crest in hockey fully administered in tackle twill, the solid red V-neck has been accented with white tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers with blue trim, with the 1989 Stanley Cup finals patch over the left shoulder.
We should note that since the NHL began requiring Stanley Cup Finals patches on their game jerseys in 1989, there have been a few notable sets that have eluded collectors, with the inaugural year of 1989 high atop the list that have proved most difficult for collectors. A few faint marks are visible over the lower front, with additional marks over each sleeve. There are also burns over each elbow section with small resulting holes, with a few stick marks and light paint transfer over the reverse numbers. Getty Image #856003656 (Conference finals) has been matched to the two small marks in the white stripe on the lower front hem, while Getty Image #939341792 (Stanley Cup finals) has been matched to the long loose blue thread over the Captain's "C".
