Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Magnificent autograph opportunity is an envelope James Naismith addressed in his own handwriting and sent to his wife in 1936. Naismith, who invented the game of basketball, passed away in 1939. He is an inaugural member of both the Basketball Hall of Fame (1959), which bears his name, and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame (2006). The founding father of basketball addressed the envelope in black fountain pen, writing, “Mrs. James Naismith” with the address below, effectively providing a nice Naismith signature about four inches long. The Cunard White Star envelope is 3 3/4" x 5 5/8” with a “Sep. 1 1936 New York, N.Y.” postmark and a “Paquebot” stamp.
A tear on the left side of the envelope does not touch Naismith’s handwriting. Return address in Lawrence, Kansas is handwritten on the space provided at the bottom of the verso.
