Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Some encapsulated beauties help to make for a swell array of goodies here and is where we'll start, with not one but two of Gordie Howe's classic 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee "Mr. Hockey" cards looking sharp and perfect indeed in PSA holders labelled MINT 9. Both are the "no number" versions, with the one in the more recent PSA holder exhibiting deeper, more vivid colors. There has only been one similar example to grade higher and receive GEM MT 10 status in the history of PSA. Meanwhile, also from '69-70 and receiving MINT 9 recognition is #189-Terry Sawchuck, with PSA figures indicating that it too is only edged by one "10". Finishing the slabbed portion of the lot is a 1977-78 Topps checklist #249 which garnered a GEM MT 10 grade, placing it in a four-way tie for top mark among similar submissions to PSA. A complete six-team set of Coca-Cola cards from 1965-66 and still in un-detached accordion-like form is present and joined by additional Boston and Montreal team sets. We spot varying degrees of browning/toning on the outer cards of most, with a Boston and a Toronto team set the exceptions. Creased Charlie Hodge (Montreal) and Roger Crozier (Detroit) cards are to mention, while all team sets except the two Canadiens still have the order form card attached, the latter enabling consumers to send away for an album in which to store the cards. Completing the variety is a lacrosse card of lacrosse and hockey legend Newsy Lalonde, with card #100 from the C59 "Lacrosse Leading Players" series free of any unsightly creases. Corner wear gives it a G-VG appearance but the card is hampered by a touch of paper loss on the reverse, (in the "L" of "Lacrosse").
