Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Definitely an underappreciated area of collecting, vintage hockey photography opens a window to the past, with quality examples that surface paling in comparison to the plethora of imagery found for baseball. We have a desirable mix of both modern and vintage images, highlighted by a number of 1930s Montreal Maroons photos (19), with most (possibly all) produced by noted photographer Rice Studios (with minor duplication present), including Jimmy Ward, Cy Wentworth, Lorne Carr, Earl Robinson, Davie Kerr and others. There are also another 28 1930s/1940s prints, with a heavy concentration of Bruins images, with some media examples with editiorial notations mixed in. Sizes vary, with most appearing in the 8” x 10” range give or take, with other highlights to include a photo of netminder Earl Robertson with the NY Americans (this image was used for Robertson’s Beehive), an image of Art Ross with Clarence Campbell, a trimmed 1934-35 CCM Green Border Leafs team picture, a media photo of Jacques Plante in action from 1959 – the year he first donned his mask, and an image of a bloodied Jimmy Orlando being assisted by referee King Clancy, from the famous stick-swinging incident with Gaye Stewart during the 1942-43 season. The modern prints include Gretzky (a few images plus a 1992 Dominos pizza flyer picturing the icon), Sawchuk, Bower, Roy, Fuhr, Sittler, Orr, McDonald and others. The majority of the photos exhibit issues one would expect considering their former use, with some minor wrinkles, creasing and toning, along with edge wear and markings to the reverse of many.
