The Little General, the late Ron Lancaster, wore these cleats during his last CFL game at the end of the 1978 season. According to information received, the legendary quarterback’s Puma cleats saw their final duty when Lancaster came off the bench to lead the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 36-26 win in Edmonton on October 29, 1978. Lancaster, who was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1982 and died in 2008, originally presented these cleats to longtime Roughriders assistant equipment manager “Torchy” Schell two days after his final game. Lancaster’s number “23” is handwritten in faded blue marker on the back of the cleats and each is attached to an 11 1/8” x 15 1/8” wooden plaque with two screws.
The cleats exhibit nice game wear that includes blue paint transfer on the left toe. No. “23” is also handwritten on the heel of the insole of the left shoe. “Presented to ‘Torchy’ Schell by Ron Lancaster on his retirement, Oct. 31, 1978,” is engraved on the gold-colored plaque affixed to the bottom of the wood plaque.
