Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021

Two scarce gum-related pieces are among the highlights of this batch of goodies, perfect to move on to another “type” collector. A mini Toronto Maple Leafs pennant was one of eight different available through a 1937 Red Ball Gum mail-in promotion and displays well, with non-detracting evidence of once having been glued on the back corners. “World Wide Gum Co. Ltd – Granby – Quebec” appears on the front of an OH BOY Bubble Gum wrapper, with a bilingual write-up on the Rangers’ Alex Kaleta on the back. A small bottom edge tear is to report but flattened for years, the wrapper is quite attractive. A young Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe and J.C. Tremblay show up on cardboard pieces cut from General Mills cereal boxes and exhibit creases/wear, with evidence of scrapbook removal on the backs. Toronto Star material is also from the 1960s, with two “Hockey Tips From The Stars” booklets present, along with ’63-64 crease-free VG-EX pictures of Howe, Mikita and Richard and a lower grade example of Mahovlich, as well as a full-page ad promoting the issue that reveals that the 42-photo set and booklet could be had for $1.00! A similar ad from ’64-65 is accompanied by one picture (Ron Stewart), an “album” designed to display photos, a sheet of team logo stickers to decorate albums and a mailing envelope. A Patterson Hockey Patter card is from the early-‘60s, while a hockey transparency-like piece is from a Blue Cap Cheese issue, with two albums (approximately two-thirds full) featuring several different subjects (sports, dogs, birds, aviation in one and military uniforms, tropical fish, Robin Hood and ancient monuments in the other), with 12 “slides” issued for each section. Two (creased) ’64-65 Fleer Dubble Bubble Little Sports Stories cards are hockey-related and considered a rare Canadian issue, with a little circular Gordie Howe cloth sticker featuring his facsimile autograph is from his time as an Eaton’s Sports Advisor – very cool. An almost all-Canucks lineup is joined by Hull and Mikita pictures in a group of (34) Toronto Sun photos from ’71-72, with two envelopes and a scarcer album (Le Progres l’evangeline) also contributing. Completing is a set (24) of ’72-73 O-Pee-Chee Player Crest inserts (VG-EX average) starring Orr and Dryden, Kahn’s Franks packaging picturing Cincinnati Stingers’ Ron Plumb and a set (Collection “E”) of 1980s Hall of Fame postcards including Orr, Newsy Lalonde, Art Ross and Ted Kennedy. Lots of neat collectibles await their new appreciative home!
