Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Always intriguing are groups of what hobbyists refer to as Cowan tiles, with the dandy depiction of legendary netminder Jacques Plante here joined by that of fellow Hall-of-Famer Dickie Moore and Canadiens’ supporting cast members Gilles Tremblay and Bobby Rousseau. The 6” by 6” ceramic affairs were reportedly meant to be sold at NHL arenas but speculation is that licensing issues led to them never being released to the public. Over 100 different players exist, with “SCREENART PRODUCTS LTD. – Made in Canada” appearing on the cork backing of each. Along with a device to hang the pieces. “H.M. Cowan”, thought to be the artist’s name, joins the colourful images. Still housed in their identified original boxes, the tiles here are close to like-new, with subtle light surface blemishes spotted on the Plante and Moore examples upon close inspection. With original vibrant colors and no edge chips or other notable flaws, this foursome will marvellously enhance a Canadiens/Cowan tile/oddball collectibles shrine.
