Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016

Cards here, from O-Pee-Chee’s classic and popular 1971-72 issue, have some condition issues but still include some attractive components. The key Ken Dryden rookie card has less-than-perfect top-to-bottom centering but is crease-free, with a couple of dinged upper corners sending it to VG-EX+. Guy Lafleur’s RC has a couple of tiny corner creases and grades VG+, while the first cardboard appearance of Marcel Dionne is VG, due in part to a light peripheral crease not affecting the image. Bobby Orr’s card #100 is crease-free with light corner wear but miscut, while his double trophy winner card comes in at EX and his All-Star example grading VG+. We spot a majority of VG-EX, VG-EX+ and EX cards amongst the rest, with an intermittent crease rendering some VG or VG+ and a few low grade fillers showing up as well. Both checklists are present but are creased, marked and low grade. The special Gordie Howe and Jean Beliveau cards, like others at the end of the numerical run, exhibit warping caused by rubber bands. Also thrown onto the pile are two packs worth of ‘72-73 cards, including checklists 190 (VG-EX) and 334 (#334 box is blackened-in but otherwise VG-EX) and Maple Leafs and Seals logo inserts. Finally, (37) cards from ’73-74 feature a few stars including 50-Clarke at EX. To be aware of is a hint of a musty smell emitted by the cards.
