Used exclusively from the sports inception until the late-1960s give or take, surviving wool hockey sweaters are a rare breed, with examples from prominent NHL clubs like the Montreal Canadiens sitting atop the desirable and minuscule pile. This particular wool was donned by Winnipegger and long-time journeyman Ted Harris in 1968-69, and it’s been photo-matched to both the 1969 Stanley Cup Playoffs and Finals! A label from Tease Knitting Co resides on the inside hem of this important and weighty wool that’s been styled with the iconic and sacred CH team crest in triple-twill, along with the blue and white sleeve and verso numbers fashioned from tackle twill that have been centered within the striping bands. A garter-style fight strap is present, and while common on ‘70s era gamers, is a rare find on any wool. The sweater also features six-eyelet configuration on tie-neck construction.
We should note that the Canadiens in this era started wearing new sets of jerseys in the playoffs, followed up by them wearing them the next season, confirming that this sweater would have been worn by Harris in the 1969-70 regular season as well. Game-wear includes heavy pilling in a number of interior and exterior areas including the sleeves and lower front, along with some light staining present on the lower front and around each elbow section. Regarding the previously mentioned photo-matches, 4 included digital photos from the 1968-69 Stanley Cup playoffs and finals (April 3rd 1969 playoffs and April 29th 1969 Finals) are showing correct number placement on sleeves and back including a slightly higher number "1" on back than the "0”, as well as the same exact placement of the red elbow sewing threads on the lower right corner of the "0" of "10" on the left sleeve. The team crest also shows perfect placement. The Canadiens in this era were Stanley Cup champs in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969.
