Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Believed to be first worn by Whitey Merritt of the Victoria Hockey Club of Winnipeg in the late 19th century, padding of the lower extremities for goaltenders was essential, especially as the game developed. Cricket pads were the models of choice to start, with reeded canvas examples all the rage. We have an antique pair of late-19th century cricket pads that possibly saw hockey use later in life, along with an attractive one-piece hockey stick. At roughly 7” x 20” and diminutive in size, the all-canvas pads feature quality construction with no maker’s marks to be found. Reeds have been placed vertically along the length, with just padding along the top section. A previous owner, most likely the first, has handwritten his name across each in fountain pen with “J Randall Williams Jr”, along with a date of “April 8 1887”. Three of the four original buckles remain intact, with only a single surviving strap. The material exhibits heavy age toning, with some inconsequential staining throughout. The accompanying stick features one-piece construction, with dual-colour taped accents along the shaft. At just under 51” in length, the full size stick has no visible maker, and was most likely produced in the 1920s. Showing thorough use along the blade and lower shaft, the stick remains crack-free and is ready for a new home.
