Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Scarce and rarely available to collectors, any and all game-used sticks hailing from Broadway HOFer Charlie Rayner are highly desirable and sought after. This offered example sits atop that minuscule pile, as it saw action in the 1950 Stanley Cup Semi-Finals against the mighty Montreal Canadiens. A Northland Pro model with rare Northland “Laconia” stamp, “Rayner” appears on the upper shaft along with a stamp from supplier Gerry Cosby. Featuring coloured striping accents, the important stick retains its tape on the blade and knob, with nice game-use exhibited including some red goal-post paint transfer to the upper shaft. An inscription on the handle divulges the stick’s important history, with “Rangers vs Canadiens, 3rd playoff game (4?)/2/50, final (home?) game”.
We should note regarding the added inscription that the 3rd game of the series was the last one played in New York, on April 2nd 1950, and it was won by the Rangers 4-1. The Rangers would also win the series 4-1, advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Detroit Red Wings. We should also note that one side of the blade is extremely rough near the bottom, with the tape ripped in sections. There is also at least one large crack present.
