Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Arguably the most desirable and important hockey autograph in existence, Lord Stanley’s signature is scarce to say the least, with far too few examples extant to satisfy advanced collections. Thankfully, we have a high-quality example for your consideration, dating from roughly the late-1870s. Most likely from a military document and appearing as a cut on linen-backed paper at approx. 1 ½” x 3”, the fountain pen signature displays well, with very minimal loss along the left hand portion. A second signature sits directly above from Prince George, the 2nd Duke of Cambridge and grandson of King George III, adding desirable provenance. The opportunity to obtain a comparable example in the future - will be very slim indeed.
Lord Stanley was Secretary of War when this signature cut was most likely executed, an office he held from 1878 to 1880. We should also mention the cut is signed "Fred Stanley".
