Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
The first goaltender (along with Georges Vezina) to be enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame, Scottish-born Charlie Gardiner immigrated to Winnipeg as an infant, learning the game he would come to love and dominate. After seven seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks which included captaining the team to their first Stanley Cup victory in 1934, Gardiner died from a brain hemorrhage shortly after, passing in his adopted Winnipeg in June of 1934. We are elated to bring to the collecting community a signed photo of the legend, and it originates from a recent Chicago estate and has never been offered at major auction previously. At 8” x 10”, the sepia-toned image pictures Charlie on-ice in uniform with his young son Bobby. The signature includes a personalization as well as “with best wishes”, and has been signed as “Chuck Gardiner & Bobby”, along with “1930-31”. An LOA from Classic will be included.
The white-bordered photo has been affixed to a stiff backing, with a section of loss along the bottom right corner, right edge and upper left corner. The image, touching as Bobby would lose his father within four short years, is clean and displays beautifully. The signature is also an exemplary example, large and flowing with no loss or fading. With an extremely limited amount of Gardiner signatures available, that supply becomes almost non-existent in regards to signed photos, with this fresh to the hobby example among the top of that small pile featuring a flawless signature and heartwarming image.
