On the evening of October 1st, 1999, a capacity crowd gathered at Skyreach to recognize and celebrate the career of the great Wayne Gretzky. Edmonton honored Wayne Gretzky by lifting his No.99 jersey to the rafters of the rink where he helped the Oilers win four Stanley Cups. With a sold-out arena and Gretzky's family and teammates in attendance, the Oilers staged an elaborate ceremony with Wayne's career highlights on the Jumbotron. "I guess it's only fitting that they're parking me (the banner) behind that net," said Wayne Gretzky, referring to the area where he was offensively potent. The crowd gave Gretzky a five-minute standing ovation when he entered through a cloud of dry ice and circled the rink standing on the bed of a slow-moving black pickup. The voice of Rod Phillips, longtime Edmonton Oilers public address announcer, cracked and tears flowed as he said: "Ladies and gentlemen, we'll now say these words for the last time ever in the building: Hockey fans, tonight's first star, number Ninety-nine Wayne Gretzky." After the ceremony the Oilers and the Rangers skated to a 1-1 tie. Ryan Smyth opened the scoring for the Oilers at 1:57 of the second period and Tim Taylor tied it for the Rangers less than five minutes later.
This wondrous white Edmonton Oilers uniform worn by netminder Tommy Salo on this historic night. This CCM airknit uniform, in goalie-cut size 58, displays the team crest on the chest with Tommy's surname across the back shoulders above his number "35". Light use with a few marks near the crest and on the exterior of the right sleeve.
This jersey displays light game use as each player was issued a set of three uniforms (one per period), produced specifically for this historic occasion. Special labeling in the tail includes a team set tag with the trainer's facsimile signature and the Elite Sportswear logo reading "Edmonton Oilers Set #2/B" and another tag with a facsimile Wayne Gretzky signature and the date, "October 1st, 1999" with additional set identification. The uniform has the Pro Player tagging in the neck with a size tag and an additional label from Elite Sportswear. This historic uniform is originally from the archives of the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club, and will come with a letter of authenticity on team letterhead from the Edmonton Oilers.
