Before his HOF coaching career with the Chicago Black Hawks, Billy Reay was a key forward on Stanley Cup winners with the Montreal Canadiens in 1946 and 1953. Reay’s team-signed McNiece’s game-used stick with his No. “14” stamped high on the shaft is from the 1948-49 season, when he led the Canadiens in scoring with 22 goals and 45 points in 60 games. “December 1, 1948” is handwritten in big, block pencil letters above the heel on the side of the shaft that is covered with Habs signatures from the likes of Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Bill Durnan and fellow deceased HOFers Lach, Harvey, Reardon, Bouchard and coach Dick Irvin, among others.
The stick, which has its original tape jobs on the knob and blade, is also signed by Ken Mosdell, Murph Chamberlain, Hal Laycoe, Joe Carveth, Glen Harmon, Howard “Rip” Riopelle, George Robertson, Jacques Locas and Ed Dorohoy.
“Jimmy McNiece’s ‘Super Special’ Hand Made in Montreal, Can. is stamped on both sides of the shaft, and “Kenny Grant Johnny Bennett, Montreal, Que.” is stamped on the front of the upper shaft.
The tape job is worn through along the bottom edge of the blade, which has nice wear at the heel. There are light cracks on the bottom edge of the heel that are commonly seen in sticks of this vintage, likely from aging.
