This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Originally produced for use in the commercial market, we have five wonderful and imaginative works of art, executed by staff artists from Disney in the 1960s/1970s. Ranging in size from roughly 8 ½” x 10 ¾” to 8 ¾” x 21”, three of the original works have been executed on Bainbridge artist illustration board, along with examples on thin paper, with one adhered to cardboard. All of the beloved characters you’ve grown up with are included, with Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, Scrooge McDuck and others. Featuring all winter/Christmas scenes, we have a pair that feature Mickey, Donald and Goofy around the Christmas tree, one designed as a Christmas card with Pluto pulling Mickey in a sleigh, one illustrating Mickey as Santa and the last shows a scene reminiscent of a Christmas Carol.
The breakdown for each original Disney artwork is as follows. 1) Mickey’s Xmas card (8 ½” x 17”). Pluto is pictured pulling Mickey in a sleigh, with a box for text on the right, executed on Bainbridge board. Just a few touches to corners to note. 2) Mickey as Santa (8 ¾” x 21”). Mickey is pictured as Santa, with Pluto and Donald looking on. A second illustration of a reindeer has been affixed to the Bainbridge artist board. Some toning is present along with a bend and creases on the right hand side. 3) Mickey and friends carolling (9” x 10 ½”). Mickey, Pluto, Goofy and Donald are pictured singing around the tree. On Bainbridge artist board, there are a few stray pencil marks along the top right and left, with a small stain beneath the illustration. There are also a few touches to corners along with a few creases to the reverse. 4) Scrooge, Goofy and Mickey (10” x 11 ½”). Mickey is seen holding Tiny Tim, while Goofy and Scrooge look on. On thin paper affixed to cardboard, there is some toning present, especially along edges. 5) Mickey Christmas (8 ½” x 10 ¾”). Mickey, Goofy, Donald and his sons are seen decorating the tree. Border lines have been drawn, with a “Walt Disney Productions” cut affixed to the lower right. On thin paper, the artwork remains in very good condition.
During the 1960s and 1970s the Disney Corporation had a close alliance with a Toronto-based advertising company. This company used depictions of famous Disney characters on bread wrappers, milk cartons and other products. Disney sent its own artists to assist with the layout of these promotional pieces and these hand sketched drawings were done by actual Disney artists and each is a one-of-a-kind original Disney piece of art. These sketches had remained in the possession of a retired advertising employee and are now available for your enjoyment.
