Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
In 1907, leagues in Canada voted to allow professional players within their ranks, signaling the demise of the International Hockey League based out of the US. Players would soon trickle back across the border, lured by the large paychecks that had made the IHL so attractive earlier on. This original breathtaking cabinet photograph displays the 1905-06 incarnation of Portage Lakes Lakers of the IHL, the world's first professional hockey team. Featuring Hall of Fame legends Cyclone Taylor, Joe Hall, Bruce Stuart and netminder Riley Hern, these large cabinet photos were made to be presented to team members, with a very limited number produced. At full dimensions of 18” x 22”, the original photo image measures roughly 14” x 17”. With no issues to note regarding the photo, it may well be the best surviving example in existence.
The photographer “C.W. Hungerford” is listed, along with an “06” date. Other members pictured along with the aforementioned Hall of Famers include Walter Forrest, Harry Bright, "Grindy" Forrester, Barney Holden, Fred Lake, James Duggan (trainer) and John McNamara (manager). There are a few marks at the bottom of the image along with a few spots of light toning, but as previously mentioned, this photo is in outstanding condition, especially for its age. There are also areas where silvering has occurred. We should also note some inconsequential staining to the matte on the reverse.
