Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
From the 1996-97 season including the NHL All-Star Game, we have a helmet worn by Mario Lemieux. A Jofa model in solid white, the embossed identifiers have been painted black, with “66” decals affixed to the center back. The padding and chin strap are intact, with a small “66” decal present on the edge of the front head piece. Nice use is exhibited, with scratches, marks and abrasions present. 1997 was an Art Ross winning season and the last before his initial retirement. The helmet has been photo-matched to the 1997 ASG, as well as to an undated photo with matching wear pattern to the "Jofa" lettering on the front of the helmet - particularly to the white spots on the top and bottom of the "O".
Getty images #280268 and #295985 from the NHL All-Star Game on Jan 18th 1997 have been matched to the wear pattern of the "Jofa" lettering on the front of the helmet - particularly to the white spots on the top and bottom of the "O". We should note that the piece displaying the number "66" that shows up in these photos was changed at some point, with a small sticker with "66" now present. An undated 11” x 14” photo that will be included also has been matched to the wear pattern of the "Jofa" on the front of the helmet - particularly to the white spots on the top and bottom of the "O”. Getty images #296054 and #277731 from April 23rd 1997, Lemieux's last home game prior to his first retirement (playoff game) seem to show the same wear pattern to the Jofa lettering but not high resolution enough to call a definitive match.
