Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
A riveting image of hockey immortal Georges Vezina, on a little card issued by Toronto’s Dominion Chocolate Company, highlights this intriguing ensemble, with 15 “Dominion Athletic Stars” included, all but four of them picturing hockey players/teams. They’re all without their original bottom sections, with the tabs or “coupons” often clipped off and sent to the company in exchange for prizes. Technically low grade, the Vezina example is however crease-free. Other Hall-of-Famers include #95-Newsy Lalonde (P with multiple creases) and 83-Shorty Green (one small light crease). From all-hockey card sets are Sprague Cleghorn’s 1924-25 Champs tobacco card (F), three 1933-34 Ice Kings; 10-Happy Day (VG+), 4-Andrew Blair RC (F) and 47-Alex Levinsky RC (P), along with a ’37-38 World Wide Gum card #51 of Busher Jackson (VG). Tossed onto the small pile is an attractive unmarked and crease-free ’51-52 Esso two-fold pocket schedule, with details of the other Dominion Chocolate cards on our website.
Other Dominion Chocolate hockey representatives, also with their lower sections torn off, are 49-Owen Sound Juniors, 60-McCaffery, 86-Langtry, 89-Coutu, 92-Hughes, 103-Browne, 106-Porter and 112-North Bay Hockey Team, while four football players include 7-Harry Batstone, 15-Gibb McKelvie, 21-Johnny Evans and 77-Alex Ponton.
