Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022

Paul Stewart served as an NHL referee for over 1000 games. Being the first American to accomplish this feat helped him stay true to his family legacy, as his grandfather, Bill Stewart, was the first American to officiate an NHL game. Paul worked an additional 49 playoff games and served on the crew of 2 NHL All-Star Games and 2 Canada Cups, all without ever donning a helmet. Retiring in 2003, Stewart was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame for his work as a referee in 2018. This referee jersey was worn by the Massachusetts native in the circa late-1980s and features his name affixed to the nameplate on the upper reverse in single white twill. Signed by Stewart in black marker on the left sleeve's orange armband, the jersey sports considerable use, with heavy wear to the labeling including fraying from numerous washings, with light pilling in areas also visible.
