Consistently ranked in the top ten public universities in the world, the University of Toronto was founded as King’s College in 1827 and was the first institution of higher learning in Upper Canada. The school’s prestigious alumni include three Governors General of Canada, five Prime Ministers of Canada, nine foreign leaders, and seventeen justices of the Supreme Court of Canada. The Varsity Blues athletic teams represent the University, with the earliest gridiron match occurring in 1861. This 1924 University of Toronto year book features team photos of numerous sporting clubs including the 1923-24 Intercollegiate champion Junior (page 324 with HOF builder Conn Smythe as coach) and Senior hockey teams (page 323). At 9” x 11” with leather covers and “Torontonensis 1924” in gilt, the large and heavy volume sports a fountain pen signature on the first page from a former owner. Loaded with period photos, the book also contains photos of the 1923-24 Varsity Blues women’s hockey team (page 330) and Victoria College women’s team (page 332). Complete, there are no missing pages and just minor rubbing to the boards and light toning to the interior pages.
