Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

Another in the line of legendary French-Canadian players who donned the sacred CH and carved out exceptional Hall of Fame careers, Yvan Cournoyer would end up playing in parts of 16 seasons with the Bleu Blanc Rouge, winning an unfathomable 10 Stanley Cups along with the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs MVP in the 1973 post season. This Montreal Canadiens captain’s jersey was worn by the Roadrunner in the 1977-78 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and early on in the 1978-79 season, the last Cournoyer would play before retiring.
Wilson size tagging is affixed to the collar, with a chain-stitched “78” year tag resting just above the inside hem. Styled with hockey’s most famous logo, dual-colour twill numbers grace the sleeves and verso, with an intact garter-style fight strap. We should note that the Canadiens would wear a new set of jerseys for the playoffs in that era, with this example first seeing use in the 1977-78 playoffs and Stanley Cup Finals prior to being worn in his last 15 games Cournoyer played at the beginning of the 1978-79 season. Images from the 1977-78 playoffs and finals show the correct number, nameplate and captain's "C" placement on the jersey, although none are high resolution enough to call a definitive photo-match. A pair of signed LOA's from Cournoyer will accompany, along with an additional LOA.
Game-wear on the desirable garment includes pilling to the interior along the lower front and back, with holes, staining and red goal post paint transfer on the left sleeve. Four team repairs are also present on the garment, with a pair on each lower sleeve.
