Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2016
Only the second time the tournament took place, the 1978 World Juniors were a “coming out” party for a 16 year old Wayne Gretzky, as this was the first time his hockey genius was witnessed on a world scale. This lot contains a Team Canada signed stick from the tournament, along with a signed photo of Wayne with the Soo Greyhounds from this same era. The stick is a CCM model produced specifically for the tournament with “Team Canada ‘77” on the shaft, along with a date stamp of “7 Dec 1977" (The tournament ran from Dec 1977 to Jan 1978). Approx. 17 signatures in ballpoint are present, including Gretzky, Rob Ramage, Pat Daley, Steve Tambellini, Tim Bernhardt, Brian Young, Rick Paterson, Willie Huber and others.
The stick remains in very good condition, with evidence of tape removal from the blade. The signatures show some fading, but remain legible, with the early Gretzky example presenting nicely. The Greyhounds photo is 8” x 10”, and it pictures Wayne on-ice in full uniform. He’s signed in the bottom left, with “Best Wishes Ron & Grace”. Originally obtained from a family that had season tickets, the media photo remains in crease-free excellent condition, with a Sault Star release stamping on the reverse. We should add that Gretzky was the tournament leading scorer and received the IIHF Directorate Award for forward at the tournament. He was also named to the Media All-Star team.
