Let’s cut straight to it this time – the greatest 1912-13 Imperial Tobacco C57 hockey card set ever assembled is on the auction block. The impressive lofty grades, combined with the cards’ haunting ghostly images will have the most serious hobbyists, as well as more casual collectors, marveling. The Hall of Fame lineup of early hockey heroes is sensational and includes the one and only C57 card, (out of over 1500 examined by PSA in company history), to ever merit NM-MT 8 recognition, with HOF Quebec Bulldog goaltender Paddy Moran’s card #18 looking like it was pulled from a pack of cigarettes yesterday! Altogether, 25 of the 50 cards are Pop 1s and alone in first place on their respective lines on PSA’s famous Population Report. There have been only (25) C57s in PSA history slabbed NM 7 and an astonishing 18 of them are present here, including HOFers Sprague Cleghorn, Gordon Roberts, Jimmy Gardner, Ernie Johnson, Ernie Russell and Percy LeSueur. The riveting cards of legends Art Ross and Lester Patrick, as well as those of Eddie Gerard and Harry Hyland, are among seven at EX-MT+ 6.5. Cards of Cyclone Taylor, Newsy Lalonde and Joe Malone are housed in holders labeled EX-MT 6, the same as HOFers Dunderdale, Hall, Darragh, Laviolette, Walsh and eight others. At EX+ 5.5 is the rookie card of Clint Benedict, while one of the set’s key cards, that of Georges Vezina and the set’s first numbered card, is a Pop-1 with none higher EX 5 – the top Vezina C57 in the history of PSA. The EX 5-or-better accomplishment has a stirring set rating of 7.50 and has been a perennial champion at PSA, garnering both current and all-time finest laurels. Good luck with these tantalizing and coveted century-old treasures.
