Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2016
Multi-talented to say the least, Lionel Conacher was named Canada’s top athlete for the first half of the 20th century due to his participation in football, baseball, wrestling, boxing and of course, hockey. This lot contains a photo that’s been signed by “The Big Train”. At roughly 7 ½” x 9 ½”, Conacher is pictured in the early-1930’s on-ice in his Montreal Maroons uniform. Shuttered by renowned photographer Rice, Lionel has boldly signed to the right of his image “With Kindest Regards to Ken + Mabel Connie”, along with a date of Jan 20th 1932. The glossy print itself does exhibit some minor issues, including some light horizontal creases that do little to detract from the image, along with slight corner wear and light staining on the verso.
There is also a pencil notation on the reverse listing “Maroons”, along with the year Conacher passed, 1954. We should add that earlier signed photos from prominent Hall of Famers are seldom found, especially one’s with extremely dark and vibrant signatures.
