Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2016
A definite and delectable hobby event here, with what most consider the “Holy Grail” of hockey cards, the rarely offered Bert Corbeau card issued by William Paterson, among the complete set of 40, all examined and graded by PSA. With no unsightly creases through the image, the coveted and riveting Corbeau prize has a diamond cut which detracts little from its beauty(!) and has been assigned a mark of GOOD 2. In the history of PSA, there have only been two other “non-cancelled” examples of elusive card number 25, one of them joining this “2” as the highest ever graded and another slabbed “Authentic”. Three cancelled Corbeau cards, (ones that were redeemed as part of a set to win a prize (a pair of skates)), also have shown up at PSA headquarters. As for the rest of the sepia-tinted ensemble, which is in seventh place on PSA’s All-Time Finest list, it boasts one of the most desirable rookie cards of all-time, that of hockey immortal Howie Morenz. It, along with the RC of fellow Montreal Canadiens’ legend Aurele Joliat, is slabbed VG-EX 4, with the two young stars immensely captivating when viewed side-by-side. Iconic goaltender Georges Vezina’s card number 19 is similar and received a mark of VG-EX+ 4.5, while the set’s other key rookie card, picturing Frank “King” Clancy, is at GOOD 2. Condition leaders are ten cards at EX 5, including Hall-of-Famers Darragh, Benedict, Denneny RC and Cleghorn. Rookie cards of HOFers Frank Nighbor and George “Buck” Boucher are among nine VG-EX 4 examples, with Broadbent and Noble RC (VG 3), Mantha RC and Malone (GOOD+ 2.5), Gerard, Dye RC, Green RC (GOOD 2) and Adams RC and Burch RC (FR 1.5) other notables. They all add up to a set rating of 3.27, with this being one of just three complete V145-1 sets ever registered at PSA. An extraordinary opportunity presents itself to serious pursuers of pre-war collectibles with these fabulous encapsulated treasures.
