After helping lead Sweden to a bronze medal at the Olympics in Lake Placid, Pelle Lindbergh made the move to North America in the fall of 1980 to continue his professional career. Drafted by his favorite NHL team, the Philadelphia Flyers, the 22-year-old goalie made an immediate impact in the American Hockey League during the 1980-81 season as he led the Maine Mariners, Philadelphia’s top farm team, to a division title. Lindbergh was showered with hardware for his personal accomplishments at season’s end, including the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Trophy as the AHL’s outstanding rookie, in addition to being named the league’s top goalie and MVP. This is the trophy that the league presented to Lindbergh, a bowl approximately 9” tall and 7 1/2” at its widest mounted on a five-stage, two-level wooden base featuring two eagles with both wings spread wide overhead. The bowl features the AHL logo and the plaque identifies Lindbergh as the league’s outstanding rookie for 1980-81. This gorgeous trophy was originally obtained from the Lindbergh family. It comes with a signed letter of authenticity.
