Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2016
Words are going to be tough to find to adequately describe this absolutely exquisite group of photos and their special presentation, but we’re going to try. Presented as a keepsake to members of Team Canada who brought home Canada’s first Olympic gold medal in ice hockey in 50 years and limited to 58 editions, the photographic images measure 8” by 12” and are each individually framed. The frames are housed in a classy 13 1/2” by 17 1/2” black box, the cover of which is actually a frame with matted images of a Salt Lake Olympic gold medal. A certificate of authenticity affixed to the back of the frame/lid reads “On behalf of the Canadian Hockey Association, Gerry Thomas is proud to present you with a custom hardwood folio of 25 Fine Art Metallic Prints.” An LOA from Ed Belfour will accompany this amazing collection.
The metallic finish and the images are fascinating to view, with each member of Team Canada depicted, often in multiple images. Brodeur, Mario, Sakic, Yzerman, Iginla, Shanahan, Niedermeyer, Smyth - all the boys are included, with a conventional team photo and one with their gold medals around their necks in a celebration pose, also present. The second such ensemble that we know of being offered for public sale, this one (#29/58) was presented to Ed Belfour. A framed letter to Ed signed by Wayne Gretzky and Bob Nicholson thanks him for his contribution to Canada’s gold medal effort. Like the letter states, it was indeed a proud moment for all Canadians. Somewhat of a shame that just one very proud Canadian can be the new owner of this captivating collection.
