The year 1997 was the season of seasons for Jacques Villeneuve in Formula One. Jacques captured 10 pole positions and had 7 race wins on his way the 1997 Formula One World Championship; he still remains the only Canadian to win the title. This helmet was prepared for the 1997 season but was never used as Villeneuve switched to the newly designed Bell Dominator helmet for the 1997 season. This Bell M1 helmet was painted by Bell S.P.O.R.T.S. Europe in Jacques’ traditional paint scheme and is tagged “R-2” on the lower back. The helmet was prepped to be used as a tobacco or non-tobacco race helmet as Bell staff would add either “Rothmans” or “Racing” decals on the Rothmans’ logos outlines. The helmet has had extra eye-port foam added but the vents have not been taped-off and a radio has never been installed. A vintage visor signed by Villeneuve with the added notation “World Champ 97” was mounted to the helmet as no visor was present on it. Also included is the original Bell carrying bag with “J.V. R-2” and faint “1997” handwritten annotations. This item is from Jacques Villeneuve’s personal collection and will come with his signed LOA.
