Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/3/2015
This extremely scarce jersey is from his and Buffalo's second season which saw the Sabres change their striping pattern on the sleeves to make the middle yellow band wider than the outer stripes. It has all of the proper tagging for a 1971-72 Sabres jersey, including the Dick Fisher Athletic Goods label in the back of the neck with a "Size 44" flag tag sewn into the bottom. General Athletic laundry instruction tagging is sewn inside the rear left tail with another tag removed above it. Gilbert scored 26 goals and 48 assists for 74 points in his sophomore season though with the very light and limited amount of wear on this rare jersey it is very likely that this one never saw game action, or very little, at best. It is, however, an amazing example of an early-1970s Perreault Sabres game jersey with his retired #11 on the back and both sleeves. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany this superb and incredibly rare jersey.
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990, two decades after the expansion Sabres made him the NHL's first overall draft pick, the slick center remains Buffalo's all-time leader in games played, goals, assists and points. Jersey was on display at some point in a museum and has their inventory tag sewn-on the back inside hem with "G-11" handwritten above it.
