Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/3/2015
Early-1980s Maple Leafs No. 7 gamer was worn by forward Rocky Saganiuk. There is evidence of a former nameplate and the current nameplate is not the original one as the jersey was made up as a Lanny McDonald jersey. Laundry instruction flag tag with size “Men 50” on the front sits in the back of the neck and there is a loop style fight strap on this type of Maska Superfil jersey used in the late-1970s early-1980s by the Leafs. There is evidence that the jersey was hemmed-up at some point and the sleeves have been shortened but no evidence of a team crest or numbers change. Game wear includes three team repairs on the right sleeve, including two with inner patches, another sewing fix on the left sleeve, and various board burns and burn holes.
The Maple Leafs were notorious recyclers during these years but we are unsure if Lanny McDonald ever wore this jersey prior to Saganiuk wore it. McDonald wore the number 7 throughout his entire tenure with Toronto, which lasted into the 1979-80 season. Saganiuk wore No. 8 during the early part of his Maple Leafs career. At some point following McDonald’s departure, in either late 1979-80 but no later than the beginning of the 1980-81 campaign, Saganiuk assumed Lanny’s No. 7 with the Maple Leafs.
