Bob Bourne won four straight Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders in the early-1980s and capped his remarkable career by winning the William Masterton Memorial Trophy in 1987-88 as a member of the Los Angeles Kings. Bourne gained significant notoriety when he was named one of eight “Athletes Who Care” by Sports Illustrated, which chose the group as the magazine’s Sportsmen of the Year for 1987. Bourne, whose elder son Jeffrey is afflicted with spina bifida, was singled out for praise as a result of his work with a school for handicapped children. This is the personal trophy that was presented to Bourne by the NHL and is originally from his personal collection. The trophy, “Presented by National Hockey League Writers Association for High Example in Perseverance, Sportsmanship, and Dedication to Hockey”, stands about 17” tall from base to the tip of the highest of three flames, which are screwed into three torches. Trophy is originally from Bourne's personal collection.
Two of the flames coming out of the taller torch are broken, one has been reglued and the other one is missing the broken piece, two others have small broken tips as well.
