This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/3/2015
This amazing 1930s Preston Rivulettes wool hockey sweater was worn by Hilda Ranscombe, who was the greatest women’s hockey player of her era. Widely considered the Wayne Gretzky of women’s hockey, Ranscombe helped lead the Rivulettes to an astounding run of near-perfect success throughout the decade of the Great Depression, winning 350 games while losing two and tying three! Ranscombe excelled as a multi-sport athlete and her speed skates are included along with three vintage patches that include softball and tennis. Her red hockey pants and socks are included with her fabulous late-1930s Rivulettes game-worn No. 5 jersey that features sewn-on felt team name on the front and number on the back. There are various team repairs on the front and the sleeves of this treasure of women’s hockey, an incredible rarity that comes with a binder with some research material and a book, as well as a letter of authenticity/provenance from the consignor who purchased them directly from a family member about 25 years ago.
Ranscombe’s CCM speed skates have 14” long steel blades and have been wonderfully preserved.
The LOHA schedule consisted of regular season games, competing against two or even six towns nearby consisting of teams from: Kitchener, Guelph, London, Hamilton, Stratford and Toronto. The Rivulettes defeated all opponents and won the LOHA championship all ten years they competed in the league.
In 1933, another women’s hockey association the Dominion Women’s Amateur Hockey Association (DWAHA) was created for the top teams from across the country to compete. From 1933-1940 the Preston Rivulettes competed for the Dominion Women’s Hockey Championship and won the title four out of eight times; sometimes they were not able to compete because of financial reasons. The team also competed in the Eastern Canadian Women’s Hockey Championship from 1934-1940 defeating teams from Montreal, and various teams in Prince Edward Island to claim the title five times.
