Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015

Lots to marvel at and think about when viewing this formidable panoramic team photo picturing members of the Saskatoon Quakers. Representing Canada at the 1934 IIHF World Championships in Milan, Italy, the Quakers were crowned world champs following their 2-1 overtime win over the United States in the championship game. The men had advanced to the final of the 12-team event by edging Switzerland 2-1, also in overtime, after having previously beaten France 9-0 and Germany 6-0. Measuring approximately 4” by 9-3/4”, the photo has revealing embossed stamping in the lower right corner which reads “L. Hillyard - Photographer – Saskatoon – Sask.” and includes the likes of goaltender Cooney Woods (far left), team captain Hobb Wilson, Tom Dewar, Les Bird, Ab Welsh, Ray Watkins, Ab Rogers, Bert Scharfe, Elmer Piper, Ron Silver, Cliff Lake, coach Johnny Walker and several team executives. Offering a swell look at pre-war uniforms and equipment, the original photograph has but some light surface scratches to mention and no unsightly creases or other notable flaws, with evidence on the otherwise blank back of having once been pasted. A special piece of Canadian and international hockey history.
