Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/3/2015
A splendid image on the cover of Braves’ slugger Eddie Mathews, in action during a night game in Milwaukee, along with 27 colorful baseball card-like images in a three-page foldout inside have always garnered the fancy of collectors. There is also of course the “first” factor of Sports Illustrated’s inaugural issue, with this 146-page Volume 1, Number 1 original in handled but not abused G-VG condition. A visible crease in the upper right corner region is joined on the cover by lighter creases, most of them small ones over by the spine which has a small tear at both the top and bottom. Small folds in the bottom corner of the last 20 pages or so include a few small tears. Minor light bends/creases are spotted down the right side of the third sheet of nine Topps card images when unfolded but nothing really – you’ll be instead zeroing-in on the marvelous pictures of Willie, Jackie, Duke, Teddy Ballgame and the rest. A wonderful trip back to August, 1954 will then be provided with the rest of the intriguing and entertaining content.
