Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2015
Lord Byng of Vimy, famous commander of British troops in World War I and later Governor General of Canada (1921-26), is the man whose wife presented the original Lady Byng Trophy. While in Canada, he immersed himself in the country’s culture and came to particularly love hockey, rarely missing a game played by the Ottawa Senators. Lord and Lady Byng were huge fans of Frank Nighbor and Lady Byng presented a trophy to in 1925 in admiration of his skills and gentlemanly conduct, an award that continues to be given out annually by the National Hockey League. This rare document, signed when Byng was on Canadian soil, measures 14x16” including the vintage frame and glass and Julian Byng has signed as the representative of King George V. The signature is bold and quite large, appearing at the top left of the manuscript. Dated August 12, 1923. Condition is very good, with toning and foxing to the paper but the signature is beautiful!
