Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015

The late, great Terry Sawchuk received this silver-plated pitcher as a member of the 1952-53 NHL champion Detroit Red Wings. The great Red Wings team of the early-1950s was in the middle of the Stanley Cup dynasty’s record run of seven straight Prince of Wales Trophy wins as the league’s regular season champions. Sawchuk had nine shutouts and won his second straight Vezina Trophy as Detroit went 36-16-18 in 1952-53 to finish first with 90 points, a full 15 points ahead of Montreal. “Detroit Hockey Club Inc. Champions NHL 1952-1953 Terrence Sawchuk” is engraved on the front of the pitcher below the figural spout of a bearded man. “Sheffield Reproduction” is stamped on the bottom of the base. The brim of the pitcher measures 4 1/4" in diameter. This historic Red Wings championship pitcher presented to one of its key HOF players, arguably the greatest goalie ever, has acquired a nice patina, though the tarnish is easily cleanable, if preferred.
