Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2015
The balance of our consignor’s ultra-fascinating pre-war Canadian gum/candy card collection is highlighted by a sports-related near set (19/24) issued by O-Pee-Chee and a Hamilton Gum set of Hollywood stars. Called Record Breakers – Fastest Things on Earth, the glossy 1933 OPC cards feature sprinter Percy Williams, swimmer Johnny Weissmuller, race car driver Malcolm Campbell and other running, driving, boating and flying speed merchants. The 1938 Hollywood Picture Star Gum card set of 40 stars Shirley Temple, Joan Crawford, Laurel & Hardy, Clark Gable and others and averages VG+, as do (28) 1925 butterfly cards from Toronto’s Harry Horne Company. Mostly crease-free Magic Trick cards (circa-1933) by OPC total 15, with 12 accompanying French translations on similar-size paper sheets. Completing the varied lot are 20 blank-backed flag cards (VG to VG-EX) and four scenes of Montreal by Hollywood Conf. Reg’d. How sweet it is!
Most of the Record Breakers cards have a crease or creases and/or gum stains on the back, with however a few EX-MT examples and several multiples of some among the 18 duplicates. Three low-grade fillers in the set of movie star cards are to mention, including Stan Laurel and Clark Gable, with three doubles; #s 3, 19 and 40. The butterfly cards are from two different series, with “Series 2” appearing on 16 of them.
