Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2015
Its hard to believe that NHL goaltenders only started protecting their faces just over 50 years ago, especially when you compare it to the fact that it was already commonplace for catchers in baseball to wear masks by the early-1880's! Gump Worsley summed it up best when asked by reporters why he didn't sport a mask, "My face is my mask". Three iconic replica masks are available here, including mounted and numbered signed examples for Gerry Cheevers and Bernie Parent, both also with mounted autographed pucks, and a Gilles Gratton replica from his season with the NY Rangers in 1976-77. All three masks were made by maker extraordinaire Don Scott. Cool!
While catcher's masks and equipment in baseball were referred to as "the tools of ignorance" during the Victorian era, no modern goaltender would dare to be "ignorant" by tending the pipes mask-less, and for obvious reasons! A trio of historic replica masks are up for auction, first we have Gilles Gratton's iconic mask from his season with the New York Rangers in the mid 70's. This beauty has been hand painted and it is in gorgeous condition, with no flaws or damage to note. Second, we have Gerry Cheevers Bruins mask with its familiar stitches, one for each puck that made impact. The mask also has a nice dark Cheevers autograph just below the left eye, and he's added both his number and "HOF". The mask is mounted with a small plate with his name, (the C in Cheevers appears to actually be a G, but it's barely noticeable) and it's numbered 15 of 500. The space is shared with a nice autographed Bruins puck in gold sharpie. Lastly, we have a matching mounted Bernie Parent mask, again well known to any 70's hockey fan. This example is also signed like the Cheevers, and it has a numbered plate stating this mask is number 14 out of a series of 500. A Flyers puck, again autographed by Parent is also mounted with the mask. No real condition problems to mention for either plaque, other than light normal wear. All three masks were made by the famous maker Don Scott, and he's added his John Hancock to the inside of the Cheevers mask.
