Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015

The balance of one of our consignor’s rather extensive 1970s and ‘80s card collection, this mostly O-Pee-Chee grab bag will wield some likely pleasant surprises and gives evidence of his brief foray into the world of PSA-graded cards. We’ll lead with the dozen or so slabbed cards, all in early PSA holders and highlighted by MINT 9 rookie cards of Luc Robitaille and Mike Vernon. Rookies at NM-MT 8 are those of Oates (2), Tocchet, Claude Lemieux, Hextall, Nieuwendyk and Sakic, the same as two Mario Lemieuxs from ’87-88 and a Bobby Orr #288 All-Star card from ’75-76. Appearing crease-free and EX-or-better in their screwdown holders are ’70-71 OPC Tony Esposito, ’72-73 Orr Action and ’72-73 Marcel Dionne, with original Upper Deck promo cards of Gretzky and Roy stored similarly. A smattering of star cards from the ‘70s and ‘80s, ’72-73 Team Canada inserts and miscellaneous raw rookie cards from both decades equal some value and lead us into a three-quarters-full 3200-count box of 1970s’ cards. Mostly commons with duplication and with condition that starts off in the VG neighborhood with over 400 cards (mostly first and second series) from ’72-73 and which improves gradually. There are approximately 600 from ’74-75, over 800 from ’75-76, some 100 from ’76-77 and close to 500 from ’77-78, the latter in markedly better shape. Close to 100 round-cornered inserts from ’77-78 are heavy with duplicates (17 different players), with miscellaneous small stacks of cards from the late-70s and into the ‘80s, a few oddball cards (four Sugar Daddy) and even a few 1950s Topps baseball cards completing the cardboard collection. Tossed onto the pile is a 5-inch high stack of wax wrappers, more than half of them from ’89-90 and the rest, other than two 15-cent jobs from ’78-79, from ’90-91. Phew, that took some time...and you should have a fun time sifting through these goodies.
