Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015

Jersey from the seldom-seen first set of 1979-80 Penguins gamers features Stall & Dean and laundry instruction tagging in the back of the neck. A size “52” flag tag sits in front of a “9” year flag tag for the first half of the 1979-80 campaign. Mesh jersey has rubberized sewn-on team crest and rubberized numbers on the back and sleeves. These rare gamers with the stretchy knit waist and fight strap were used more sparingly as the Pens recycled many of the prior years’ sweaters over into the beginning of the season until January 1980, when the team switched to the black-and-gold color scheme in an attempt to mimic Pittsburgh’s world champion NFL Steelers and MLB Pirates. A rare “Blue Penguins” find!
Brian Spencer played seven games with the Penguins in 1977-78. Spinner most likely wore this jersey with his sewn-on white twill surname letters on a wide mesh nameplate in the 1979-80 pre-season before playing his final pro season in the minors.
There are reddish-brown stains on each side of the “15” on the right sleeve, and another stain on the white band in the middle of the sleeve, with an unrepaired burn hole on the back of the sleeve, and another unrepaired burn hole on the back of the left sleeve. There is a mark on the upper front and a couple of marks in the number 15 on the back.
