Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2015
What do Dennis Muckenthaler and goaltending legend Terry Sawchuk have in common? They each wore goalie masks made especially for them by the one and only Lefty Wilson. Muckenthaler’s distinctive mask was custom-made for the Southfield Michigan Midget Hockey Club goalie by the Red Wings trainer at Detroit’s old Olympia in 1971 at the behest of former NHL player Joe Klukay, who helped coach the minor hockey team. The pioneer mask-maker’s craftwork is written all over this fiberglass classic, which comes with its vintage straps and the remains of some vintage foam padding and tape on the interior. There is a crack through the bridge of the nose and a small chip on the left upper edge that do not diminish this treasure’s display.
