Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015

The only world heavyweight boxing champion to ever retire undefeated, the late, great Rocky Marciano signed this framed vintage print. Marciano, who died in a plane crash in 1969, placed a big bold blue ink autograph across his upper right arm on this photo poster of himself following through on his knockout punch to the jaw of heavyweight champ Jersey Joe Walcott in Philadelphia on September 23, 1952. The Brockton Blockbuster, who is a HOFer and Sylvester Stallone’s inspiration for the Rocky movie franchise, claimed the universal heavyweight title in his 43rd pro bout and mounted six successful title defenses before retiring with a perfect 49-0 record with 43 KOs in 1956. The signed and dedicated poster displays to 18” x 21 1/2" mounted on its backing as professionally matted in a 27” x 33” frame.
Marciano was trailing on all three official scorecards when he knocked out the 38-year-old Walcott in the 13th round. Rocky is ranked by many boxing historians as one of the best heavyweight fighters of all time.
The dedication above Marciano’s signature reads, “’Eddie’ Boston own (we miss you)”. There is also a small dedicated autograph on Walcott’s right arm in the bottom left corner that reads “Jack West says hello”.
